  Biting and nuisance flies around cattle cause
serious disruption to
normal routines and can spread some important infectious diseases.
Clover can supply a fantastic and amazing natural solution involving the distribution of fly parasites. These tiny insects search out and kill developing flies and are proving very successful. By simply spreading the fly parasites around the breeding sites of flies every fortnight significantly fewer flies develop to adulthood.

Most farmers have been relying on deltamethrin pour-on products such as Butox Swish, Spot-on or Flypor as the main means of control.

However, killing the adult flies that have already landed on your cattle is, in some ways, tackling the problem a bit late in the day! Its great for heifers turned out to grass, that get bothered under trees and near watercourses. In this case these pour-on products give a long-acting effect and can be an excellent labour-saving product.

There are some other products that help tackle the fly problem at source and reduce the numbers around cattle housing and in the parlour.

  
SpY and Oxyfly are used alternately on building walls and anywhere where flies roost and will kill flies for about a month. A 400g tub of SpY is sufficient for 40m x 40m building. 250ml Oxyfly is sufficient for 1,000 sq mtrs and is a little cheaper although resistance develops fast if SpY is not used in alternate months. Ficam W is an alternative to Oxyfly should resistance become a problem.

A 200-cow farm usually needs to use 2 bags of fly parasites every fortnight. Units with fewer fly-breeding areas have got away with just one bag but it is essential to start early and release the parasites every fortnight.
